Press Release Body = Successful Results of Australian Migration for 2006
April 18 2007--- The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs has just released the latest figures of migration to Australia for the year 2006, and the numbers all look promising. For the financial year 2005-2006, more than 131,000 people arrived and settled in Australia. This means 8000 more people than the previous year were granted their Australian visas and are now set to live the good life in the Land Down Under. In the state of Victoria alone, says Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Amanda Vanstone, 32,297 migrants have settled, 1,716 more than the previous year. This is the highest number since the Coalition came to government. The majority of new arrivals entered Australia through the family visa and the 457 Australian working visa for both skilled and professional migrants. Says Senator Vanstone, "Our migration target for 2006-2007 is about 140,000, including 97,500 in the skill stream, and that number does not include the 13,000 refugee and humanitarian entrants who will begin new lives in Australia through our humanitarian programme.'
Australia\'s vigorous campaign for migration have paid off for last year, and hopefully, this financial year, more people will be getting apply for Australian visa and settle in the Land Down Under. For the past years, Australia has been experiencing a shortage in workforce. Now, under the simplified Australian visa system, an extra 10 points will be awarded to State/Region sponsorship under the Skilled Independent Regional (SIR) visa. Australian visa is based on a points system, which means the more points an applicant garners based on her or his skills, credentials, and specific cases, the faster their Australian visa application will be. Skilled migrants and professionals whose occupations are included in the Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) will be fast-tracked in their Australian working visa. As of time writing this, more trades and engineering occupations are set to be added to the MODL, giving more chances of a smooth Australian immigration to qualified applicants.
Majority of the migrants came from India, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Iraq, and Asian countries such as the Philippines and China. Below is a table for Australian Immigration for the year 2005-2006, as culled from Senator Vanstone\'s DIMA website. Australian Immigration by State
